The unique properties of the wool fibre are the basis of the wool textile industry. The complexities of the structure and composition of the fibre give rise to its specific properties, but also continue to provide challenges for both wool production and wool processing. At the time the CRC was formed, it was recognised that further research into fibre formation and fibre properties would be required, with a clear focus on the particular types of Merino wools of concern to the CRC’s main programs. This was also to provide a link with wool processing through the identification of any specific fibre properties which may result in specific, significant challenges or opportunities for processing methods.
