This diagram illustrates how shed fibres decrease staple strength. The shed fibres contribute to the weight of the staple which influences the linear density (ktex) but does not contribute to the force required to break the staple (Newtons) as shed fibres are already discontinuous. So staple strength (N/ktex) is decreased as the numerator is lower and the denominator is higher.
