Primitive sheep have a photoperiod driven follicle cycle that leads to an annual shedding of the fleece. However, Merino shedding appears to be driven by nutrition rather than photoperiod, but the role of photo-period should not be ignored. It is important to be aware of follicle shutdown as it results in a reduction in staple strength and the possible loss of fibres from the fleece. Better breeding and nutrition will help prevention of shedding
This module describes the relationship between follicle shutdown and staple strength.
